For this issue of our news letter at Bodyfit I want to start off with sharing an experience I recently had with all of you. Now for the record I will start by saying this is not the first time I have witnessed this nor will it be the last I am sure. However this time struck a nerve I guess because it involved one of our members at Bodyfit. I often come across or run into members in local gyms outside of Bodyfit and for the most part will just say a quick hello if we happen to make eye contact but keep anything outside of that very limited as I often find most members seem very uncomfortable when I see them at another gym besides Bodyfit. Possibly thinking I would be offended they would go anywhere else which is silly, I am not offended in the least bit. In the long run what I value most is the success of all of you in reaching goals and Bodyfit being the place you found the most value with in that journey. Now that a picture has some what been painted I will tell all of you the rest of the story. As I leaving one of the many gyms I belong to I had stopped in the area you buy protein shakes, bars etc. As I was sitting at a table mixing the protein I brought with me getting ready to drink it in walks a Bodyfit member. The member looked as though they had just finished up a workout and was on there way out the door. On there way out they stopped in to get shake before leaving. At this point I put out a soft listening ear to hear what they were going to order in hopes that this member had either been to one of our education seminars or possibly even done a nutrition program. They proceeded to order what I am 100% certain was in their mind not only a healthy choice but also what their body required after a workout. Unfortunately what they ordered was far from the case. It was a drink off the menu that not only had very little of what they needed but more importantly a whole lot of what they didnt need. I am not telling you this story to pick on anyone but rather point out a very important and unfortunate fact. The fact being that most if not all large scale fitness centers will sell you what taste good but isn’t always good for you. They use the fact that they are a gym so what they sell you MUST be healthy to there advantage which for us the consumer is a valid thought process. It is no different then going to your doctor with the assumption that what ever medication he gives you is what you need to get better. After witnessing this I sat and pondered how to make key information more readily available to my members. We currently are continuing to try our education seminars but the turn out has been less then we hope for. If any of you reading this have suggestions I would love to hear them. I am constantly trying to come up with more ways to get the members at Bodyfit educated on the keys to success that are often very small changes that can be easily overlooked. As always thank you all for taking a few minutes to read our monthly news letter.

Stress and Exercise
Managing stress and relieving the symptoms of workplace stress can be accomplished by having a regular exercise routine. Regular and consistent exercise will not only alleviate stress but will also contribute to overall health and a feeling of well being.
Causes of Stress
Stress is an every day occurrence for most people. There are exams to be written, deadlines to keep, rush hour traffic to negotiate and so on. Most of these so called “external” factors that cause stress can’t be avoided. If they can’t be avoided, then exposure to stress needs to be managed by avoiding situations that will cause stress as much as possible. Limit the risk, so to speak. If that can’t be done, then manage the body’s reaction to stress so as to handle stress and anxiety better.
Coping with stress and the effects of stress need not be complicated or expensive. A simple program of regular exercise is all it takes to reduce stress related health problems. Exercise can even eliminate some of the so called “internal” causes of stress, which are related to one’s frame of mind and outlook on life.
How Exercise Relieves Stress and Anxiety
Exercise essentially burns away the chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine that cause stress. At the same time, vigorous exercise releases endorphins into the system. Endorphins are morphine-like hormones that are responsible for the feeling of elation, or well being that distance runners get from running. Other chemicals like dopamine and serotonin are also released in the brain during exercise
. Together, these give a feeling of safety and security that contributes to off-setting some of the “internal” causes of stress, such as uncertainty, pessimism and negative self-talk.
To benefit from exercise, it needs to be regular. Exercise needs to be part of a daily routine. Instead of working during lunch, why not take the time to go for a brisk walk, a run or work out at Bodyfit? Exercise will reduce stress
and reducing stress can increase productivity.
Since exercise reduces stress chemically, it can also have a meditative effect during sustained cardiovascular work outs. The rhythmic running on the open road or treadmill can relax and clear the mind. Clearing the mind allows for a fresh approach to perplexing and stressful problems.
Regular exercise also impacts on the way you feel about yourself. For example, if clothes fit comfortably and your body is toned due to regular exercise, you feel good about yourself. If you feel good about yourself, your self confidence is given a boost and stress due to feelings of inadequacy is reduced as a result. It will not only make you healthier but regular exercise will also cut down on stress and anxiety and their associated symptoms.
Member of the Month
Upon turning 40 last year, I reflected on all the aspects and transitions of my life, both good and bad. I have wonderful wife, two beautiful daughters, great friends and family and a good job that is personally rewarding. In my mind, I had always been an active and relatively healthy person. Perception. I recall 20 years ago I weighed 180 lbs and was fit and trim. Through college, medical school and beyond a “new normal” was reset every few years as my weight would ratchet up several pounds, my esteem would ratchet down and the desire to keep my shirt on at the pool became permanent. As a physician, I regularly see the negative consequences that result from chronic bad habits and life decisions with regard to personal health and diet. When my wife told me that my oldest daughter went up to a “fat man” at the store thinking it was me, my perception was broken. Reality sucks.
I still remember being invited to Bodyfit, though it took a few invitations to actually get me there (thanks Frank!). Man. I was addicted from the word ‘go’. Any apprehension I may have harbored with regards to “feeling embarrassed” or being the “slowest or weakest guy” quickly evaporated. The venue and format is ideally structured to allow everyone to work at their own pace. All the guys are incredibly encouraging to each newbie, because we were all “there” once and want everyone to succeed. The camaraderie really helped get me coming back. Once Dean got to know me better, he was able to hone in on my abilities and when I was or wasn’t giving my best.
In the months that have followed, I have enjoyed losing 15 lbs, 6-7% body fat and at least 2 pant sizes. These are only numbers and pale in comparison to the incredible boost in my energy, stamina and confidence. It is now an uncommon day when someone doesn’t just ask me if I’ve lost some weight…it’s more like “Holy cow, Batman! What the heck have you been doing!”. OK fellas, lets be honest, your wife doesn’t mind being married to a little bit o’ eye candy either. I knew I had arrived the other day when my same daughter that had mistaken the “fat man” for me, told me “Daddy, your getting skinny like mommy now!” Kids don’t lie.
I have also committed to Deans diet plan for me. I have never had any nutrition counseling whatsoever. I will never again doubt that diet is 80% of what is important. Choices, commitment, effort. It is now second nature to me and I no longer crave chips, ice cream, etc…but I do enjoy some cheat meals here and there. My metabolism has found another gear for sure as I feel I am always hungry even a few hours following a big meal.
What’s it like? Its tough work outs and good outcomes. It’s great people and a terrific place to train. The best way I describe it to people is that I feel like I’m getting younger. What’s that worth? Nuff said. I’m 41 now and don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. I plan on skiing, mountain biking, hiking, running and golfing for a long, long time to come, but I know I need to take care of myself. Change takes effort and commitment, but its also OK to have a friend in your corner.
Change is in the air! Can you believe fall is upon us? I love this time of year and all the “extras” it brings: the football games, changing leaves, crisp air, bonfires, cider and donuts…yikes! Cider and donuts brings one “extra” I don’t particularly love! We are changing up some things in the studio to help you head off any of those “extras” you don’t want-check out these highlights:
- We added a TRX circuit on Tuesdays at 11:30 with Becky! Class will fill up fast so head to our website and sign up now!
- Men’s Division — check out our website for details. Teams, schedules and highlights will be posted there as well, –don’t waste any time getting signed up, this class is a hit!
- New Member Groupon Special- We just launched a huge deal for New Members or anyone that has not been in to workout longer than 6 months ago. Share this with your friends!! Now is a great time to get fit and head off the holiday “extras”.
- Personal Training-be sure to ask us about our personal training specials, especially as the holidays approach!
Change is scary but can also be refreshing. It can mean growth! We are definitely experiencing that here at Bodyfit! Our classes are growing which means our client base is too!
To help us grow strong and efficient, we are implementing a couple of changes:
- We will be asking that everyone has a credit card on file with us. Stop by the front desk and we can get it set up for you.
This will help us keep things running smooth and not have any lapse in your account, especially helpful when you need to run in just before class starts and may not have time to stop by the desk to make a payment.
2. 24 hour cancellation policy
Class capacity filing up quickly can mean clients on wait lists. We do our best to accommodate everyone that wants to get a workout in. Knowing that things come up and you may not be able to make a class that you’ve signed up for, we ask that you give us 24 hours notice if you’re in need of cancelling that class. This will give us time to alert the wait list clients of the openings.
Please note that our system is set up so that you will automatically be charged a $20.00 cancellation fee for late cancellations. A 24 hours notice will not be charged. (In the event of an emergency where 24 hours notice is not possible we ask you call the studio to make us aware)
Exciting things are happening and we are so glad you’re a part of it! We can’t wait to see what good change this season brings here at Bodyfit and in your lives.
Let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you in your healthy endeavors!
That’s the scoop,
